Mountain lions in Arkansas are a rare sight to behold. As a matter of fact, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission removed mountain lions from its list of endangered species and stated that there are no mountain lions in Arkansas. However, this statement appears to be somewhat unstable due to the fact that there have been several mountain lion sightings in Arkansas during the past decade.
According to an article in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Don Scott of Little Rock, Arkansas acquired a picture of a mountain lion on the game camera that he had set up near the area where he hunts deer. The photo was snapped during the summer of 2003.
There have also been numerous, unofficial sightings of mountain lions throughout various other areas of the state. According to some comments made on BigGameHunt.net several Arkansas citizens have sighted these elusive creatures. While I have not seen mountain lions with my own eyes, I have several neighbors who have had the opportunity to see wild mountain lions themselves. Although sightings are rare, they do occur periodically.
Arkansas Game and Fish believes that the apparent mountain lion population may be due to the occasional release of “pet” mountain lions into the wild. While this is a possible explanation for the mountain lion sightings, most residents seem to believe that the mountain lions are developing a population by more natural means. Maybe the population has been there all along.
Where Can I See a Wild Mountain Lion?
Unfortunately, there is no proven method for spotting mountain lions in Arkansas. Those people who have had the privilege of seeing wild mountain lions have spotted them during rare, unexpected moments. Some have been spotted by people traveling on highways, but many mountain lions are seen by people who spend a great deal of time in the woods. Hunters, ranchers, and outdoorsmen are often the people who report seeing the mountain lions.
Are Mountain Lions Dangerous?
Mountain lions are certainly large enough to kill humans, but they do not customarily do so. Like most wild animals, mountain lions prefer to keep to themselves and will generally shy away from the presence of humans. However, they can and will attack humans if they feel that they are being threatened or if they are especially hungry. Children make especially easy targets for these cats.
What Should I Do if I Encounter a Mountain Lion?
The most important thing to remember is to not run. Running will trigger the cat’s hunting instincts and it will almost definitely attack you. It is best to stand your ground, make yourself look big by standing tall and pick up any small children who may be accompanying you. If the lion attacks you, fight with everything you’ve got. When it comes to fighting for your life there are no holds barred. Gouge the cat’s eyes, use rocks and sticks, and whatever else it takes to defend yourself. If you put up a good fight you might be able to discourage the cat from continuing the attack.
